Lacrosse For Leukemia Event, December 2008
Brady Story
This is not a story about a lovely lady bringing up three lovely young ladies of her own.
Nor is it this the story of a man named Brady raising three boys all alone. This Brady
Bunch you see is a group of high school lacrosse players from Arizona, California and
Nevada that all came together on a chilly Saturday morning in December to play
lacrosse and raise money for a kid named Brady (Brady Wein), the six moth old son of
West Coast Starz lacrosse coach Mike Wein and his wife Rachel, who this past
September at the age of three months was diagnosed with Leukemia.. A disease that
attacks the blood cells and until recently was nearly always a fatal diagnosis.
It all started this past September when Coach Wein and his wife received devastating
news that there then 3 month old son Brady had contracted ALS, a form of Leukemia.
Mike, a Massachusetts native and avid Boston Pro Sports fan moved to the Phoenix
area 10 years ago, has been a fixture on the national collegiate lacrosse recruiting scene
for the better part of the last decade as part of Scott Hochstadt's West Coast Starz
organization. When word got to Hochstadt about Brady's condition the call for help
went right out. You see the medical treatment for Brady is not fully covered by the
Wein's insurance. Furthermore, Rachel Wein has been unable to return to work since
Brady was diagnosed as she has been by her sons side 24/7.
Brady has already undergone two rounds of chemotherapy and has spent about half of
his young l ife in the hospital at Phoenix Children's Hospital, where he is scheduled to go
though a Bone Marrow transplant in the next few months.
Hochstadt, the founder of Starz Lacrosse and former three time All American
attackman from Maryland immediately got the ball rolling. With the help of Starz staff,
parent volunteers and the Las Vegas Lacrosse establishment, high school and middle
school lacrosse players from California , Arizona and Nevada gathered for a full day
Jamboree followed by a shooting clinic hosted by University of Maryland head lacrosse
coach Dave Cottle and members of his staff/team.
It was amazing, according to Hochstadt, to see the lacrosse community come together
for one of its own on such short notice. This thing came together in a little over a month.
Thanks to tireless efforts of those who helped put this on we raised almost $20,000 to
help pay for Brady's care and medical bills. Over 300 players, coaches and families
came out to support Lax 4 Leukemia.
The good news is that Brady is doing as well as can be expected. He is a fighter and
what a joy to be around. ALS is a treatable form of the disease when caught early
(as it was with Brady). We are all hopeful that the doctors and treatment will help to
cure this awful disease and that Brady will grow up to be a lacrosse coach himself some
day.
If you are interested in donating to support Brady in his treatment, please
